Considering the thyroid is an integral part to your body’s endocrine system, applying an integrative approach to any thyroid disorder is an important investment to make in the present and future health of your body. The thyroid has a hand in reproduction and proper growth and development, metabolic processes, body temperature, heart activity, and brain functionality. Since the thyroid is involved with so many bodily functions, it’s important to view thyroid disorders from an integrative approach, one that includes nutrition and supplements, botanicals, prescription drugs, and other complementary approaches

What are thyroid disorders?

Thyroid disorders refer to conditions that affect the thyroid gland directly, otherwise known as the butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of your neck. The thyroid performs several critical functions for your body’s homeostasis, including regulating the numerous metabolic processes that occur throughout your body at any given minute. To produce the vital hormones that signal metabolic functions, the thyroid uses iodine. Thyroxine, also referred to as T4, it the primary hormone that is secreted by the hormone.

The thyroid works primarily through a feedback mechanism with the brain. When thyroid levels are low, the hypothalamus in the brain secrets thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) that signals for the pituitary gland to release thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH then tells the thyroid to start producing more T4, and the cycle continues. It’s a constant ebb-and-flow system that goes back and forth all day long until our hormonal balance is complete

Naturally, if an element in this feedback mechanism is off, or if the thyroid is not able to secrete proper amounts of T4, that’s when a thyroid disorder develops. Common thyroid disorders include hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, and goiters.

An integrative approach

Because your thyroid plays a critical roll in numerous bodily functions and performances each day, a thyroid disorder can only be treated through a total-body, integrative approach that addresses nutrition, lifestyle, medication, and supplements.

Here at Grewal Center, we start with a functional nutrition plan. Our approach is to first increase the diversity of phytonutrient-rich fruits and vegetables in your diet, followed by the elimination of food triggers. We also pursue more advance food plans and focus on reducing inflammation

From a lifestyle perspective, we focus on adequate sleep plans, coupled with exercise regimes that are custom tailored to each individual. Exercise increases endorphins, improves mood, reduces anxiety, and improves sleep. It’s critical.

To complete the integrative approach, we look at a supplements plan, including selenium, zinc, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Iodine, and Iron. Lastly, there’s a medications plan that focuses on hormone replacement, dosing, and absorption.

Through our integrative, comprehensive approach, we are able to see how each category performs in relation to the thyroid disorder, providing us with the necessary information to make adjustments that are supportive of the patient moving forward. The thyroid is a vital hormonal gland in your body – we give it the thorough analysis it deserves.
