When testing a combination estrogen-progestin pill (Prempro) in a clinical trial, the results showed an increased risk of serious conditions, including: heart disease, stroke, blood clots, and breast cancer. Hormone therapy can make breasts appear denser on mammograms, which makes it harder for technicians to detect breast cancer cells. Additionally, when administered for more than a few years, hormone replacement increases the risk of contracting breast cancer. Although the severity of findings varies from study to study, it’s worth considering these potentially serious side effects when looking at hormone replacement therapy.
